Classical Indian & Contemporary DanceKathakKathak is the North Indian Classical dance form, derived from the word “Katha” which means ‘Story’. There is a popular saying - “Katha kahe so kathak kehlave” meaning 'the one who tells a story is known as Kathak'. It is characterized by exciting and entertaining quality of intricate and rhythmic footwork, spectacular and rapid spins. The skilful use of directions, the eye and the facial expressions altogether add a different dimension to the pace of the dance presentation and are the dominant and most endearing features of this style.
MohiniyattamMohiniyattam, a traditional South Indian Classical dance form evolved in Kerala, comprises of the subtle gestures and use of the eyes in a very coy yet sensual manner. The term Mohiniyattam comes from the words "Mohini" meaning 'a woman who enchants the onlookers' and "attam" meaning 'graceful and sensuous body movements'. The word "Mohiniyattam" literally means "dance of the enchantress". Mohiniyattam is characterized by charming, slow and merged movements. Besides the body movements and the foot work, “the mudras” (hand gestures) and facial expression plays an important role.
Contemporary DanceContemporary Dance Unlike the clarity of the classical dance styles, the contemporary dance comprises of a plethora of movements formed by the synthesis of dance styles like Modern Dance, Release Technique, Improvisation and so on. The anomalous dance style is very dynamic and incorporates exuberant floor movements. Through concerted observation, perception of breath, weight and energy flow, light and conscious dancing with use of space and levels is envisaged.
